…and that girl is my daughter. She kind of rocks! Here’s the story behind this cover:
Kayla had mentioned that she wanted to be in a video. I chose “Familiar Taste of Poison” because she loves Halestorm… and because the alternative probably would have been Selena Gomez or Katy Perry. It’s not that I’d never go there, because I totally would. Pop songs are a blast to re-imagine. I wanted to give her a chance to really rock out though.
Kayla had just started drumming, so the recording session was pretty rough. In fact, I was so focused on getting a solid drum take that I forgot to check the video camera, and it died about 10 minutes in. *facepalm*
A lot of sound layers were added to give the song the necessary depth. The end result was a confidence booster for Kayla, which is really what this project was about. She’s still insecure about seeing and hearing herself on recording, but since we finished this song, she’s much more comfortable with it, and I’m very proud of her.
